For GovBall at Randall’s Island Park, we were asked to give a giant Statue of Liberty sculpture a tattooed sleeve. The project came to us through Klughaus Agency, and we designed a collection of American traditional-style tattoos before painting them across Lady Liberty’s raised arm.
Painting on a sculpted surface felt very different from working on a flat wall. We used spray paint to carry each design around the arm’s curves and irregular contours, adjusting the artwork as it wrapped in and out of view.
GovBall has reused and updated the sculpture over the years, adding oversized sunglasses and a rainbow-colored torch flame for Pride. It was a really fun project, and we loved seeing the tattooed arm remain part of Lady Liberty’s evolving look.
