American Mural joined the Greetings Tour production team for this 14-by-40-foot mural at a downtown Charleston parking garage. Gherman was part of our crew on site. Once the background and letter structure were in place, our team focused on the detailed brushwork inside the postcard letters.
Our contribution included the West Virginia State Capitol, Fred Torrey’s Abraham Lincoln statue Lincoln Walks at Midnight, the sternwheeler on the Kanawha River, the portraits, and several smaller architectural and local details. The larger design also features the Bell X-1 plane, Appalachian Power Park, FestivALL, and musicians from Mountain Stage.
Spray paint established the broad color fields, shadows, and gradients across the mural. We used brushes for the faces, figures, windows, lettering details, and edges that needed more control. That combination let the postcard read clearly across the parking garage while still giving each letter its own close-up details.
