American Mural designed and painted this exterior logo mural for Out of the Closet Thrift Store in Jamaica, Queens. Out of the Closet is an AIDS Healthcare Foundation thrift store whose proceeds help fund HIV prevention and treatment services.
The client wanted its familiar logo lettering filled with New York graffiti. We built the pink letters from tags, drips, stars, arrows, and local references while keeping the name clear from across the roadway.
The wall sits beside the Van Wyck Expressway on sloped ground, so we brought in a rough-terrain scissor lift to reach it. We primed the wall before any color went down, then combined house paint for the large shapes with spray paint for the graffiti details. A UV-protective mural coating over the painted areas added another layer of defense against sun exposure.
The finished piece sits between a mural and a hand-painted sign, with clear, functional lettering and plenty of movement inside it.
